A project on comparative analysis of literacy data for age group 7 and above has been taken up by the NIAE as part of its statistical data base for literacy. On the basis of an analysis of 1981 census records, comparable data for this age group for 1981 has been compiled at national, state and district levels. In this booklet, an attempt has been made to present comparative position of literacy statistics of the age group 7 and above for the years 1981 and 1991. Decadal growth rate of literacy for 1981-91 and change in the index of gender equality during this period reflects the improvement in the field of literacy and in narrowing down the disparity between male and female literacy.en_US
