Abstract: The broad objective of the study is two-fold. Firstly, the study seeks to assess the changes in demand for higher education in Arts and Science colleges in Kerala. Secondly, the study seeks to examine the changes in the socio-economic and academic profile of the students in these colleges. The study is conducted in the context of the decline in the number of young people in the college going age group as a result of the decrease in birth rate in the state as also in the context of the proliferation of higher educational institutions mostly in the unaided or self-financing sector.
