Abstract: The District of West-Dinajpur is a product of the partition of Bengal in August, 1947. Since then the district has undergone several significant changes in its geographical contents. Its area has been expanded and administrative structure reorganised. The district lies between 25° 10*55" and 26° 35-15'' north latitude and 87°48'37" and 89°0'30" east longitude. The district in bounded on the north west by the district of Darjeeling, on the north and north-east by Dinajpur and Rangpur districts of Bangla Desh, on the south and south-east by Rajsahi and Bogura districts of Bangla Desh, on the southwest by the district of Malda and on the west by the Purnea district of Bihar. The river Mahanada forms its northern boundary. The river also forms a portion of the boundary on the south-west between Malda and West Dinajpur.
