Abstract: The Fifth All-India Educational Survey, which provides data as on 30 September, 1986, is comparatively more comprehensive than the Fourth Survey. In this survey three questionnaires, namely Village Information Form, Urban Information Form and School Information Form were canvassed. Through the first two of these forms, data were collected from all the villages and all the urban areas on the availability of schooling facilities. Data have also been collected regarding the existing facilities for pre-primary education, non-formal education and Adult education. Through the School Information Form, data were collected from all the schools on students, teachers, buildings, facilities, equipment, etc. As in the previous surveys, the data were first compiled at the block/tehsil level, on the basis of which the district level tables were prepared. Next, the preparation of the State level tables was done from district tables. Finally at the NCERT, national tables of the survey were prepared from the State Tables.
