India has a long tradition as well as reputation of running premier educational institutions across the time including private higher education institutions such as “Gurukuls” (700-500 BC) and of “Medieval Cosmopolitan” universities especially at Takshila and Nalanda 2000 years ago. The system has metamorphosed itself from being simple to highly complex structure and the change has been sometimes in great quantum. The growth of these higher education institutions has been by leaps and bounds and one can witness the dramatic change in the ecology of Indian higher education system. Further, higher education in India today is neither elitist nor a luxury but a necessity. Some of the important dimensions of this change in the Indian higher education system are expansion, accessibility, affordability and quality.en_US
