Abstract

Prof. Ganga Prasad Vimal’s credentials are so vast that it would be difficult for me to describe them in detail. He is fromer Director of the Central hindi Directorate, MHRD, a former Professor, School of Indian Languages at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, member of many acedemic bodies working in the fields of Gandhian Studies, Himalayan Studies, Hindi Language and Semantic Studies, etc. He is also working on quite a few advisory committees and university bodies. But, he is first a writer- a frontline writer of the new wave of Hindi poetry and short story. Starting with poetry, Prof. Vimal made a deep mark in the field of fiction, drama and translation. He has about a dozen poetry collections, (Alikhat-Adikhat), about a dozen short story collections, (Inpa-Phinta, Who Loves Where and other poems), five novels and few books on criticism (Adhunikta Shaitya Ke Sandarbh Mein, Premchand; Punra Mulyankan). Some of his short stories and a novel have been turned into films: Bokshu: the Myth based on his novel Mrigaantak. Widely travelled, Prof. Vimal has been bestowed with many national and international awards including literary prize from Hindi Academy, Delhi, Urdu Academy, Delhi, Maharashtra Bharti, Maharashtra Hindi Academy. He has presented papers to many national and international conferences and was invited to U.K. as guest-writer. Prof. Vimal has been a driving force behind the first Afro-Asian Writers Conference held at New Delhi some time ago.
